MY PRESENTATION ON BUILDING THE NEXT GENERATION OF BUSINESS LEADERS

I am a member of the Youth Advisory Group, which operates under the Women Creating Wealth programme managed by the Graça Machel Trust. We were assigned the task of preparing this presentation in collaboration with the team from Zambia. We were required to complete the work and present it two weeks after the national elections in Tanzania.
However, several challenges emerged. After the elections, there was great tension and sadness due to the unrest that occurred. On top of that, internet access was shut down nationwide. As a team, we found ourselves in deep uncertainty, wondering how we would accomplish our assignment without the ability to communicate online. After seven days, the internet was restored, but by then, a lot of time had already been lost.
This left us with only five days to complete a demanding task that normally required much more time. At this point, I was officially assigned the responsibility of preparing this topic. Despite mental exhaustion, physical fatigue, and emotional strain caused by the election environment, I had to push myself and ensure the work was completed on time.
I sat down and applied all my energy, knowledge, and commitment to ensure the content was well-structured, easy to understand, and reflective of the real economic environment of our continent as well as the goals of the Women Creating Wealth programme. The aim was to deliver a meaningful and impactful presentation to youth, women, and development stakeholders across all six participating countries: Tanzania, Kenya, Malawi, Zambia, Senegal, and South Africa.
In this presentation, we focused on explaining the current state of the business environment in Africa, how technological changes are transforming enterprises, why innovation is becoming the foundation of competitiveness, and how global competition continues to rise. We also emphasized the importance of developing business leaders who are ethical, knowledgeable, and capable of navigating economic and social changes.
Despite the difficulties we faced, I was proud to see the work come together. This experience reminded me that any young person aspiring to be a leader must be ready to stand strong even in challenging circumstances. It also taught me that sometimes the best outcomes are born from difficult moments.
I believe that through this presentation, we contributed to the journey of building a new generation of business leaders who will bring positive transformation across Africa.

IN-DEPTH EXPLANATION OF THE TOPIC: THE CURRENT BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT AND THE CALL FOR NEW LEADERSHIP

1. Global Business Landscape
Today’s business environment is more interconnected than ever. Global economic shifts, cross-border trade, and the rise of new markets have made it possible for African businesses to grow beyond their borders. This has created huge opportunities, but also greater competition.
This means that a business leader today cannot think only within their country’s borders. They must understand global trends, identify emerging opportunities, and adapt quickly to a world that is constantly changing.

2. Innovation and Creative Thinking
In today’s market, innovation has become the heartbeat of every successful enterprise. Innovation does not always require a groundbreaking invention; sometimes it is simply a better way of doing an existing task—more efficiently or more conveniently for the customer.
In a continent like Africa, where businesses often face challenges such as limited resources, high production costs, and unemployment, innovation is a powerful tool that enables small and medium enterprises to grow, survive, and compete.
Aspiring business leaders must therefore be thinkers, creators, problem-solvers, and risk-takers.

3. Technology and Digital Transformation
Technology has revolutionized how businesses operate. From financial transactions and digital marketing to communication and information management, technology has reshaped every aspect of business.
These digital tools have lowered barriers, giving young entrepreneurs a chance to start businesses without needing large capital. Business leaders today must understand how to use technology to:
1. Reduce operational costs
2. Reach more customers
3. Communicate efficiently
4. Improve the quality of products and services
Ignoring technology in today’s economy means limiting your business potential.

4. Shifting Consumer Behaviour
Modern consumers are more informed, more connected, and more demanding than ever. They compare products, read reviews, check social media, and look for businesses that offer transparency, convenience, and trust.
Business leaders must therefore understand:
1. The importance of building customer trust
2. The value of providing excellent service
3. The power of listening to customer feedback
Customers today are looking for an experience—not just a product.

5. Social Responsibility and Sustainability
Today’s businesses are expected not only to make profits but to also consider their impact on society and the environment. Sustainable leadership has become essential in building strong, long-lasting enterprises.
Africa needs leaders who are:
1. Responsible and ethical
2. Community-focused
3. Aware of environmental and social needs
Such leadership strengthens businesses, builds trust, and creates positive long-term impact.

Conclusion
This presentation was more than an academic assignment; it was a journey of learning, reflection, and resilience. The next generation of African business leaders faces both tremendous opportunities and significant challenges. To succeed, they must have strong values, boldness, modern skills, and an understanding of how the world is evolving.
I am confident that through this presentation, we provided not just information, but also hope, inspiration, and direction for the youth who will shape the future of our continent.
